1 The Coastal Series

The paintings in the Coastal series were created over a two-year period, and as paintings sold, I created new additions in the same vein. The series was still underway when COVID-19 erupted and everything closed down.

This was one of the most enjoyable and liberating series of work I’ve created to date. I was in the coastal mindset of optimism that the colors of water evoke. It began in the spring, when I had several reasons to feel lighter, freer and could breath easier.

I was an Artist in Residence at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and I had just given my studio a thorough spring cleaning, leaving space to breathe, creating a blank canvas to start something anew. The Legislative Session had just ended successfully, so my wonderful job with the honorable Delegate Ned Carey became part-time again, giving me more freedom. Then I received an invitation to show my work at the Peninsula Gallery in Lewes, Delaware, and with my huge windows open on a gorgeous spring day, inspiration found me and it simply flowed.

The paintings alternated between energetic and serene, sort of like the experience of a vacation at the beach with exciting days of water sports balanced by lovely evenings unwinding on the beach with glass of wine by a fire.

While I am always drawn to blues and aquas and to the spirit of optimism, in March of 2020, this series, like all others things, came to an end.
